1804 Anchor Ascent Ballooning Barrel Berlin Descending Gondola Parachute Professor Shoulders
EDITORS COMMENTS
"This head and shoulders portrait depicts Professor Jean-Pierre Bourguet, a pioneering figure in the early history of ballooning. The photograph, taken in Berlin, Germany, on May 23, 1804, captures the intensity and excitement in Bourguet's eyes as he prepared for one of the most daring feats of human transportation at the time. Ballooning was still a novelty in the early 19th century, and Professor Bourguet's ascent marked an important milestone in the development of this new form of air travel. In the image, he is shown wearing a coat and hat, with a miniature gondola and balloon in the background. The balloon is tethered to the ground with an anchor, and a small barrel of hydrogen gas is visible nearby. The equipment used in ballooning at the time was rudimentary, and safety measures were limited. Professor Bourguet's ascent was made possible by the use of a lightweight gondola, which was designed to carry both the pilot and the necessary equipment. The lack of a parachute or other means of controlled descent added to the inherent danger of the enterprise. Despite these risks, Professor Bourguet's ascent was a significant achievement, and it helped to advance the scientific understanding of atmospheric conditions and the possibilities of human flight. The photograph is a testament to the courage and curiosity of the early pioneers of aviation, and it serves as a reminder of the thrill and excitement that has always been associated with the exploration of the skies." This photograph is part of the extensive collection of the National Aerospace Library, held by The Royal Aeronautical Society, and is available through Mary Evans Picture Library.
