In this image from the Thomas Bankes Bible, published in 1787, we find the Old Testament patriarch Zebulun depicted in quiet contemplation. Zebulun, the ninth son of Jacob and Leah, is identified by the traditional symbol associated with him in Jewish and Christian art: an anchor and a net. According to the biblical account, Jacob blessed his sons with prophetic words, and for Zebulun he said, "I will enlarge Japheth, and he shall dwell in the tents of Shem; and Canaan shall be his servant. And Zebulun shall dwell in the haven of the sea; and he shall be for an haven of ships; and his border shall be unto Zidon" (Genesis 49:13). The anchor and net symbolize the security and protection that Zebulun and his tribe would provide to seafaring nations.
