EDITORS COMMENTS
Antony Doab and his son Paul, 16, leave the Moss Side Inquiry today, 18th August 1981. Mr Doab alleges that he was 'jumped on' by police after giving evidence yesterday. This powerful image captures a moment of tension and resilience in the aftermath of the infamous Moss Side riot. On July 8th, 1981, chaos erupted as over 1,000 young people besieged the police station in Moss Side, Manchester. The unrest escalated when a policeman was shot with a crossbow bolt through his leg. For three nights straight, the streets were engulfed in flames and looting spread throughout Princess Road, Clarendon Road, Rusholme and surrounding areas. The photograph reflects the lasting impact of those turbulent days as Antony Doab walks alongside his son Paul. Their expressions reveal both weariness and determination to seek justice for what they experienced during this dark chapter in Manchester's history. It is important to note that at that time, only the Manchester Police forces were equipped with full riot squad gear across Britain. This image serves as a reminder of not just one family's struggle but also highlights broader issues surrounding policing tactics during times of civil unrest. This poignant snapshot from Memory Lane Prints encapsulates an era defined by social upheaval while honoring those who fought for truth amidst adversity.
