Shoes came off and dresses were hurriedly tucked up when schoolgirls, pigtailed Margaret, 13, and Heather, 12, of Plymouth, Devon, spied a mysterious looking box floating near the rocky shore. But the backwash from every wave that splashed on the rocks, left the box tantalisingly just out of reach - and it was then that Margaret had the brainwave. " Grad hold of my pigtail and I think I can just reach it" she told Heather. And while Heather pulled hard on those pigtails, Margaret strained forward and grabbed it. What a pity it contained nothing more valuable than sea water! 23rd April 1955
