Engelbert Humperdinck collects his Dalmatian dog Cheb
Engelbert Humperdinck collects his Dalmatian dog Cheb from Walton Police Station after it had been picked up by Police when it wondered off from his home in St Georges Hill, Surrey. Engelbert paid the usual 4/- for the dogs keep at the station and Police Sergeant Jim Maguire gave him a bail receipt ticket. This is not the first time that Cheb has wondered off, in fact he is becoming a regular customer at the local nick. 19th October 1969

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this print from 1969, we witness the legendary singer Engelbert Humperdinck collecting his mischievous Dalmatian dog, Cheb, from Walton Police Station. The charming canine had managed to wander off yet again from their home in St Georges Hill, Surrey. As a routine procedure, Engelbert paid the standard fee of 4 shillings for Cheb's stay at the station while Police Sergeant Jim Maguire handed him a bail receipt ticket. Cheb seems to have developed quite a reputation as an adventurous pup with frequent visits to the local nick. This incident marks just one of many instances where he has tested his owner's patience and caused quite a stir within the community. Despite these escapades, it is evident that Engelbert holds great affection for his spotted companion. The black-and-white snapshot captures not only the bond between man and dog but also offers us a glimpse into life in the swinging sixties. With its vintage charm and nostalgic aura, this photograph transports us back to an era when pets were cherished members of our families and police stations played unexpected roles in our daily lives. Arthur Sidey skillfully immortalizes this moment through his lens, reminding us of simpler times when even celebrities like Engelbert Humperdinck faced everyday challenges like retrieving their beloved four-legged friends from custody.
