EDITORS COMMENTS
This woodcut print captures the essence of Charlemagne, the legendary figure who shaped European history in the 8th and 9th centuries. Charlemagne, born to Pippin the Short and Bertrada of Laon, became King of the Franks in 768 after ruling jointly with his brother Carloman I. His ambition knew no bounds as he embarked on a mission to expand his empire. Though faced with setbacks like a disastrous incursion into Spain, culminating in the Battle of Roncesvalles, Charlemagne proved himself victorious against the Saxons by compelling them to adopt Christianity. His influence extended beyond military conquests; when Pope Leo III fled Rome, it was Charlemagne who brokered a deal that restored Leo III's position and earned him the title of Holy Roman Emperor. Regarded as both the founder of French and German monarchies and hailed as "the father of Europe". Charlemagne's empire united most of the continent during an era known as Carolingian Renaissance. This monochrome woodcut from Giovios Elogia vivorum bellica virtute illustrium showcases his regal stature and commanding presence. As we gaze upon this historic image, we are reminded not only of Charlemagne's military prowess but also his enduring legacy that continues to shape our understanding of medieval Europe.
