Nicolas Fabri de Peiresc, astronomer
Nicolas-Claude Fabri de Peiresc (1580-1637), French astronomer. Peiresc was born into a wealthy family at Aix-en-Provence. He studied at Toulon and Montpellier, graduating in law in 1605. Peiresc was a noted intellectual who corresponded with most of the great thinkers of the age. His own work was diverse, making important contributions to history, geography, egyptology, ecology and zoology. In 1610 his patron purchased a telescope and Peiresc used it to make observations of Jupiters moons. In the same year he discovered the Orion Nebula. He coordinated observations of a lunar eclipse in 1635, and from the readings made accurate determinations of longitude. This engraving comes from Gassendis biography of Pieresc published in 1651

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of Nicolas Fabri de Peiresc, a brilliant French astronomer who left an indelible mark on the scientific world during the early 17th century. Born into a wealthy family in Aix-en-Provence, Peiresc's insatiable thirst for knowledge led him to study law and graduate in 1605. However, it was his passion for astronomy that truly defined his legacy. With the aid of a telescope acquired by his patron in 1610, Peiresc embarked on groundbreaking observations. He meticulously studied Jupiter's moons and made an awe-inspiring discovery - the Orion Nebula. Peiresc's intellectual prowess extended far beyond astronomy alone. As a historian, geographer, Egyptologist, ecologist, and zoologist, he corresponded with some of the greatest minds of his time. His diverse body of work encompassed various fields and contributed significantly to our understanding of these disciplines. In addition to his scholarly pursuits, Peiresc possessed exceptional determination and precision. He coordinated observations during a lunar eclipse in 1635 which allowed him to accurately determine longitude measurements. This remarkable engraving from Gassendi's biography immortalizes this extraordinary thinker whose contributions continue to inspire generations of scientists today. Todd-White Art Photography has flawlessly captured both the historical significance and intellectual depth embodied by Nicolas Fabri de Peiresc through this monochrome image – an exquisite piece that pays homage to one of history's most influential astronomers.
