Roosevelt bullet, 1912 chest X-ray C016 / 2549

Roosevelt bullet. Chest X-ray showing the bullet used in the non-fatal shooting of former US President Theodore Roosevelt (1858-1919). Roosevelt, who had been president from 1901 to 1909, was shot on 14 October 1912 by saloon-keeper John F. Schrank (1876-1943), during Roosevelts unsuccessful campaign in the 1912 Presidential election. The bullet is labelled at lower left. The bullet had passed through a sheaf of speech papers and a steel eyeglass case, lodging in muscle. It was decided not to remove the bullet. Schrank was declared insane and died in a mental hospital. Photograph from the Bain News Service

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in American history - the aftermath of an assassination attempt on former US President Theodore Roosevelt. Taken in 1912, this chest X-ray reveals the bullet that was used by John F. Schrank to shoot Roosevelt during his unsuccessful campaign for the 1912 Presidential election. The image showcases the bullet lodged within Roosevelt's muscle, having passed through a sheaf of speech papers and a steel eyeglass case. Remarkably, it was decided not to remove the bullet from his body. The intensity of this photograph lies not only in its historical significance but also in its portrayal of resilience and strength. Despite being targeted by an assailant, Roosevelt remained determined and undeterred. John F. Schrank, who attempted to assassinate Roosevelt, was declared insane and spent his remaining years confined to a mental hospital until his death. As we delve into this monochrome image captured by the Bain News Service, we are reminded of how political campaigns can sometimes take dangerous turns. This visual testament serves as a reminder of both the fragility and fortitude inherent within our political system. Preserved by Library of Congress/Science Photo Library, this rare glimpse into one man's brush with mortality offers us insight into an extraordinary chapter in American politics while highlighting the indomitable spirit that defines our nation's leaders.
