Tokamak-15 nuclear fusion reactor C013 / 1348
Tokamak-15 nuclear fusion reactor. Nuclear engineer standing on top of the Tokamak-15 (T-15) nuclear fusion reactor at the Kurchatov Institute of Nuclear Power, near Moscow, Russia. This was the one in a series of nuclear fusion reactors built here using the Soviet tokamak design. It consists of a ring-shaped toroidal chamber in which the plasma is confined using magnets. The T-15 was the first fusion reactor to use superconducting magnets. It operated from 1988 to 2005. Photographed in 1989

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in the history of nuclear fusion research. Taken in 1989 at the Kurchatov Institute of Nuclear Power near Moscow, Russia, it showcases the impressive Tokamak-15 nuclear fusion reactor (T-15) and a dedicated nuclear engineer standing atop it. The T-15 was part of a series of Soviet-designed tokamak reactors constructed at this renowned research center. What sets this particular reactor apart is its utilization of superconducting magnets, making it the first fusion reactor to incorporate such advanced technology. These magnets played a crucial role in confining plasma within the toroidal chamber, enabling scientists to study and harness thermonuclear reactions. In this image, we witness an adult male scientist immersed in his work on top of the T-15 reactor. His presence symbolizes human ingenuity and dedication towards unlocking clean and abundant energy sources for our future. The white lab coat he wears signifies his expertise as a physicist and researcher in high temperature physics. As we delve into this photograph's historical context, we are transported back to an era when scientific advancements were rapidly shaping our understanding of nuclear physics. This snapshot serves as a testament to both Soviet innovation and international collaboration within the field. Overall, this remarkable image encapsulates not only technological progress but also highlights humanity's relentless pursuit of sustainable energy solutions through groundbreaking research at esteemed institutions like Kurchatov Institute.
