Viking ring fortress wall, artwork
Viking ring fortress wall. Artwork showing the construction of the wall of one of the circular Viking fortresses known as trelleborgs. The remains of these forts have been found in what is now Denmark and Sweden, dating from the Viking Age (8th to 11th centuries). The wooden fortress wall or rampart was 5 metres in height, and around 17 metres across at the base. It was constructed from oak, with poles between an inner and outer wall, earth and stones filling the gap, and inner and outer walkways on top. A sentry or lookout is keeping watch. The inner circle of the fortress (lower left) had pathways of wooden planks
