Albermarle Armstrong Glider Horsa Landings Normandy Secondflight Towing Whitworth
EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the moment of history as an Armstrong Whitworth AW.41 Albermarle, registration number G-AGRN, of the Royal Air Force's No. 26 Squadron, tows a Horsa glider over the English Channel on the morning of June 6, 1944. Known as "Albermarle I" or "Albermarle Mk I," the AW.41 was a British twin-engine, four-seat transport aircraft, primarily used for towing gliders during the Second World War. The Horsa glider, a British design produced by the Saunders-Roe company, was a versatile and essential component of the Allied invasion of Normandy, codenamed Operation Neptune. Capable of carrying troops, vehicles, and supplies, the Horsa gliders played a crucial role in the establishment of the initial beachhead and the expansion of the Allied foothold in Europe. The Albermarle's powerful engines, coupled with its large wing area, enabled it to tow the Horsa gliders with ease, ensuring their safe delivery to the drop zones behind enemy lines. In this photograph, we see the Albermarle and Horsa forming a perfect union, symbolizing the combined might and ingenuity of the Allied forces during the most significant military operation in history. This image, taken from the Mary Evans Prints Online collection, offers a rare glimpse into the past, providing a poignant reminder of the heroic efforts and sacrifices made by the aircrews and ground personnel during the Normandy landings. The determination and courage displayed by the men and women involved in this mission ultimately paved the way for the liberation of Europe from the grip of the Axis powers.
