EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph, Ruth Williams Khama, an English woman, is seen cradling her baby girl Jacqueline, with a tender expression on her face. The year is estimated to be around the late 1950s or early 1960s. The backstory of this image is one of interracial love, controversy, and historical significance. Ruth Williams, born in England, made headlines when she married Seretse Khama, the heir to the Bechuanaland Protectorate, now known as Botswana, in 1948. Their union was met with intense opposition, both in Botswana and in the United Kingdom. The British colonial authorities, fearing the potential political repercussions of an interracial marriage, exiled Khama and forced him into exile. Despite the challenges, Ruth and Seretse remained steadfast in their love for each other and their commitment to their people. They raised their four children in exile, and in 1956, Seretse was allowed to return to Bechuanaland after intense international pressure. In 1966, he became the first president of the newly independent Botswana. Ruth Williams Khama played a crucial role in her husband's political career, serving as a diplomat and advocate for Botswana's independence. She continued to support her husband and their children throughout his presidency, passing away in 2002. This photograph is a poignant reminder of a remarkable love story that transcended racial and political boundaries, and contributed to the history of Botswana. It is a testament to the power of love and the strength of the human spirit in the face of adversity.
