Court of the Cutlers Company: examining the work of their apprentices, London, 1902 (1903)
Court of the Cutlers Company: examining the work of their apprentices, London, 1902 (1903). The Worshipful Company of Cutlers is the guild for the trade of knife making and repairing. The Cutlers Company arms have been in use since 1476. Its current Elephant and Castle crest was granted in 1622. The elephant and castle crest gave rise to a pub of the same name on the site of an old cutlers inn at Newington, London. This inn in turn gave its name to the area of London known as Elephant and Castle. From Living London, Vol. II, by George R. Sims. EDITORS COMMENTS
This photo print, titled "Court of the Cutlers Company: examining the work of their apprentices, London, 1902 (1903)" offers a glimpse into the rich history of knife making and repairing in England. The image showcases a group of men seated inside the prestigious Cutlers Hall in London. These individuals are members of the Worshipful Company of Cutlers, an esteemed guild dedicated to this skilled trade. The photograph captures a moment frozen in time as these knowledgeable craftsmen meticulously examine the workmanship of their apprentices. Bathed in soft lighting from an elegant chandelier above, they sit with utmost concentration, surrounded by shelves displaying various knives and cutlery pieces. Dating back to 1476, the arms of the Cutlers Company have stood as a symbol of excellence and tradition within this industry. Notably, their current crest features an elephant and castle motif that was granted in 1622. Interestingly enough, this emblem gave rise to a renowned pub named Elephant and Castle on the grounds where an old cutler's inn once stood at Newington. As we delve into this remarkable snapshot from Living London by George R. Sims published in 1903, we are transported back to early 20th century Britain—a time when craftsmanship reigned supreme and livery companies held great influence over their respective trades. This print serves as both a testament to British ingenuity and a tribute to those who dedicated themselves to perfecting their craft within the realm of cutlery making.
