Laika the space dog
First animal in space. Laika, the bitch who became the first animal in space, inside a mock-up of the cabin of the Soviet Sputnik 2 spacecraft. Sputnik 2 was launched on 3 November 1957. Laika (meaning " Barker" or " Husky" ) was contained within a sealed cabin with a food store and an air conditioner. Soviet propaganda at the time maintained she survived around a week, but in fact she died after just a few hours due to overheating and panic. The spacecraft was not designed to be recovered and it burnt up as it re- entered the atmosphere on 14 April 1958, 162 days after its launch. Still image from the film 10 Tears of the Space Age

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the historic moment of Laika, the brave space dog who paved the way for manned spaceflight. In this image, we see Laika inside a mock-up of the cabin of the Soviet Sputnik 2 spacecraft. Laika, meaning "Barker" or "Husky" was enclosed within a sealed cabin equipped with essential supplies and an air conditioner. Soviet propaganda initially claimed that she survived for about a week in space; however, it was later revealed that poor Laika tragically perished after just a few hours due to overheating and panic. The Sputnik 2 spacecraft itself was not designed for recovery and ultimately burned up upon re-entry into Earth's atmosphere on April 14,1958 - exactly 162 days after its launch. This poignant still from the film "10 Tears of the Space Age" serves as a reminder of both human ingenuity and sacrifice during those early years of space exploration. It symbolizes our relentless pursuit to push boundaries beyond Earth's limits while also highlighting ethical concerns surrounding animal experimentation. Laika's legacy lives on as an icon in space history, forever etched in our minds as humanity took its first steps towards conquering outer space. This photograph stands as a testament to her courage and contribution to scientific progress during one of mankind's most significant achievements – venturing into uncharted territories among stars.
