EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the moment of the marriage of Princess Maud of Wales, later Queen of Norway, and Prince Carl of Denmark, who would later become King Haakon VII, at the private chapel of Buckingham Palace on 22 July 1896. The young couple, both first cousins of King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra, who are standing behind them, exchange loving glances as they embark on their new life together. Dressed in elegant Victorian attire, the bridal party exudes an air of regal sophistication and joy. Princess Maud, born in 1869, was the youngest daughter of the reigning monarch, while Prince Carl, who would later rule Norway, was the eldest son of the future Christian IX of Denmark. Their marriage marked the beginning of a new chapter in both their lives, as well as in the history of Norway, which gained its independence from Sweden just a few years later. This beautiful image, taken in July 1896, is a testament to the deep familial and royal connections that bound together the European monarchies of the late Victorian era.
