EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a pivotal moment in the history of the Arabian Peninsula during World War I. In the image, Emir Feisal and his Arab Northern Army, also known as Feisal's Army, are seen entering the major Red Sea port of Yanbu al Bahr (Yanbu) in western Saudi Arabia. Accompanied by a smaller force of 2,000 camels from three disbanded battalions of the Imperial Camel Corps Brigade, Feisal's troops make their way into the city. Yanbu served as a crucial supply and operational base for both Arab and British forces in their joint efforts to fight against the Ottoman Empire. The year was 1916, and the desert landscape, dotted with palm trees and camels, offers a stark contrast to the chaotic and violent battles that had been taking place in the region. The historical significance of this moment is palpable, as the Arab Revolt, led by Emir Feisal, played a vital role in the eventual defeat of the Ottoman Empire and the emergence of modern Saudi Arabia. This photograph is a testament to the bravery and determination of the soldiers who fought in this little-known but important chapter of World War I history.
