EDITORS COMMENTS
This historic portrait captures the enigmatic figure of Hussein bin Ali, the Sharif and Emir of Mecca and King of Hejaz, in the year of his abdication in 1924. Born in 1854, Hussein bin Ali rose to power in 1908, leading the Arab Revolt against the Ottoman Empire in 1916 during World War One. His reign marked the establishment of the Kingdom of Hejaz, which encompassed the holy cities of Mecca and Medina. The turbaned ruler is depicted with a regal air, reflecting his status as a leader and a father. His eldest son, Ali, succeeded him as the ruler of Hejaz, while another son, Faisal bin Hussein bin Ali al-Hashimi, became the King of Iraq as Faisal I between 1921 and 1933. This drawing, produced in 1924, is believed to be the first portrait of King Hussein ever created. It offers a glimpse into the rich history of the Arab world during a pivotal time in the early 20th century, when the Arab Revolt set the stage for the emergence of modern Arab states. The portrait serves as a testament to Hussein bin Ali's significant role in shaping the political landscape of the Middle East and his enduring legacy as a father and a leader.
