EDITORS COMMENTS
Plate 1: Hydromys chrysogaster, the Water Rat, from the Collection of 49 Original Watercolour Drawings of Animals by Ferdinand Lucas Bauer during the H.M.S. Investigator Expedition to Australia, 1801-1803. This exquisite watercolour drawing by Ferdinand Lucas Bauer depicts the Water Rat, Hydromys chrysogaster, a native Australian mammal also known as the Australian Water-Mouse. The illustration is part of a larger collection of 49 animal drawings created during the historic H.M.S. Investigator expedition led by Captain Matthew Flinders. Bauer, a German naturalist and artist, accompanied the expedition as its natural history artist. His detailed and accurate drawings of the various flora and fauna discovered during the journey were essential for scientific documentation and identification of new species. The Water Rat, a member of the Muridae family, is a semi-aquatic mammal that is well adapted to life in and around water. It is found throughout eastern and northern Australia and is characterized by its long, scaly tail, webbed hind feet, and rounded ears. The species is an important food source for many Australian predators, including the freshwater crocodile. This illustration of Hydromys chrysogaster is a significant historical record of the natural history of Australia during the early 19th century. The detailed rendering of the animal's features and its natural habitat provide valuable insights into the biology and ecology of this fascinating creature. The drawing also reflects the high-quality artistic skills of Ferdinand Lucas Bauer, whose work continues to be admired for its beauty and scientific accuracy.
