18th Century Asterales Asterid Bauer Eudicot Ferdinand Lucas Bauer Herb Investigator Angiospermae Dicot Dicotyledon Goodeniaceae Magnoliophyta Velleia

EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite watercolour painting depicts Velleia pubescens, a herbaceous plant belonging to the Goodeniaceae family, which is part of the larger order Asterales within the class Magnoliophyta, or flowering plants. The painting is a masterpiece by the renowned 18th century botanical illustrator Ferdinand Bauer. Velleia pubescens, commonly known as the downy Velleia, is an angiosperm, or seed-producing plant, and is specifically classified as a dicot, or dicotyledon, meaning it has two seed leaves. This eudicot, or advanced dicot, is native to Western Australia and is characterized by its yellow flowers, which bloom in clusters. Bauer's meticulous attention to detail is evident in the intricate depiction of the plant's veined leaves, the delicate petals of its flowers, and the fine hairs that cover the plant's stems and leaves, giving it the name "pubescens," meaning "downy" or "hairy." The painting is held in the esteemed Botany Library at the Natural History Museum in London, where it serves as an invaluable resource for botanical research and education. Bauer's work, along with that of other 18th and 19th century botanical illustrators, laid the foundation for modern taxonomy and our current understanding of the natural world. Ferdinand Bauer (1760-1826) was an Austrian botanical artist who worked extensively in England, producing over 1,500 illustrations for various scientific publications. His work was highly regarded for its accuracy and beauty, making it an essential contribution to the field of botany and the history of science.
