EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: "Scoutmaster P.W. Kruger Leads Denver Scout Troop in Johannesburg, South Africa, 1913" This evocative black-and-white photograph captures the image of Scoutmaster P.W. Kruger leading the Denver Scout Troop in Johannesburg, South Africa, in 1913. The scene is set against the backdrop of a colonial past, with the men dressed in their full scouting uniforms, complete with hats and badges. P.W. Kruger, a distinguished figure with a stern yet compassionate expression, stands at the front of the group, his arms folded across his chest, as he gazes intently at the young scouts before him. The scouts, all wearing their uniforms with pride, appear focused and attentive, ready for their next adventure. The Denver Scout Troop, a part of the larger Boy Scouts Association in South Africa, was likely named after the city in the United States. The presence of a troop with such a name during the colonial era reflects the strong cultural and historical ties between South Africa and the United States during this time. The photograph offers a glimpse into the rich history of scouting in South Africa and the role it played in shaping the lives of young boys during the colonial period. It also highlights the importance of community and leadership, as embodied by Scoutmaster Kruger, who guided and mentored the next generation of South African men. Overall, this photograph is a valuable historical record of a significant moment in the lives of these young scouts and the broader context of colonial South Africa. It serves as a reminder of the enduring impact of scouting on individuals and communities, and the important role that leaders like P.W. Kruger played in shaping the future of a nation.

Lord Kitcheners Blockhouse System In South Africa. The Ramifications Of The Blockhouse System, Which Played So Large A Part In The Concluding Operations In South Africa, After The Second Boer War, Are Shown Here By Black Circles And Lines, Which Represent Respectively The Blockhouses And The Barbed Wire Entanglements Connecting Them. Actually, The Blockhouses Were About 600 Yards Apart; That Is, About Three To Every Mile. It Will Be Seen That All The Railways Were Protected By A Line Of Little Forts Along One Side Of The Rails, And That Pretoria And Johannesburg Were Surrounded By A Network Of Blockhouse Cordons. The Other Lines Sometimes Followed Roadways, As From Bloemfontein To Ladybrand, Or They Cut Across The Open In Order To Close Districts Used By The Boer Bands, Such As The Lindley-Bethlehem Country. From Pretoria The Blockhouses Extended Eastwards To Komati Poort, Which Is Beyond The Range Of The Map. From Field Marshal Lord Kitchener, His Life And Work For The Empire, Published 1916
