JJ Thomson, British physicist, c1896-c1915
JJ Thomson, British physicist, 1896-1916. Joseph John Thomson (1856-1940) discovered the electron and was a pioneer of nuclear physics. In 1896 at Cambridge he began experiments on cathode rays, demonstrating that they were in fact particles with a negative charge and were much smaller than an atom. These particles were later renamed electrons. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1906 and was knighted in 1908. (Colorised black and white print)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This colorized print showcases the renowned British physicist, JJ Thomson, during his prime years from 1896 to 1915. Joseph John Thomson (1856-1940) revolutionized the field of nuclear physics with his groundbreaking discovery of the electron. At Cambridge University in 1896, he embarked on a series of experiments focused on cathode rays, ultimately proving that they were composed of minute particles carrying a negative charge - later named electrons. Thomson's remarkable contributions to science earned him numerous accolades and recognition throughout his career. In 1906, he was honored with the prestigious Nobel Prize for Physics for his profound discoveries. Two years later, he was knighted by King Edward VII in acknowledgment of his exceptional achievements. This mesmerizing portrait captures Thomson's dedication and passion as a pioneering scientist in the early twentieth century. His intellectual prowess and unwavering commitment to unraveling the mysteries of atomic structure propelled him into scientific stardom. The expertly colorized rendition breathes new life into this historic image, allowing us to appreciate not only Thomson's significant contributions but also the vibrant era in which he lived and worked. This print serves as a testament to Sir Joseph J Thomson's enduring legacy as one of history's most influential physicists whose work continues to shape our understanding of fundamental particles and their role within our universe.
