during WW2.
The Ark Royal that served in WW2 was in fact the Ark Royal III. The Ark Royal III was in the limelight more frequently than any other Royal Navy Warship during her relatively short career. Most notably for her involvement in chasing the Graf Spee (Germanys famous pocket battleship) and playing a key role, along with Force H, in the destruction of the mighty German battleship Bismarck, pride of the Kriegsmarine. All this after having been hailed as being sunk by the German Ministry of Propoganda at the very beginning of the war. However, she was torpedoed by the German U-boat, U-18, on the 13 November 1941 and did sink, next day, approximately 30-50 miles east of Gibraltar. Biplanes like these Swordfish were used on Aircraft carriers for much of the war.

EDITORS COMMENTS
Stepping into history, a squadron of Fairey Swordfish planes stands poised on the flight deck of HMS Ark Royal during World War II. This iconic print captures the bravery and resilience of these biplanes as they prepare to launch into action. HMS Ark Royal III, the star of the show, shone brightly throughout her short but illustrious career in the Royal Navy. From chasing down Germany's infamous pocket battleship Graf Spee to playing a pivotal role in sinking the mighty Bismarck alongside Force H, she defied expectations time and again. Despite being declared sunk by German propaganda early on in the war, this remarkable vessel continued to make waves. However, fate had its own plans for HMS Ark Royal III. On that fateful day of November 13th, 1941, she fell victim to a torpedo attack from U-18, succumbing to her watery grave just east of Gibraltar. The Swordfish planes showcased here were an integral part of aircraft carrier operations during much of World War II. These biplanes served valiantly alongside their naval counterparts and played a crucial role in defending our skies. This image from Memory Lane Prints transports us back to Circa 1940 when courage soared through the airwaves and heroes were born amidst turbulent seas. A testament to those who fought bravely for freedom and justice.
