Photograph, India, 1896.
The Hunt was formed by the Army in 1870 out of the regimental and private packs stationed around Peshawar. Jackal were hunted instead of the fox, and were very plentiful. The pack marched to Kabul during the 2nd Afghan War (1878-1880), and then back to Peshawar. The maintaining of a pack was extremely difficult, due to the climate and frequent postings of officers.

The Peshawar Vale Hunt, 1896
EDITORS COMMENTS
captures a fascinating glimpse into the world of hunting in colonial India. This photograph, taken by an unknown photographer in the late 19th century, showcases a group of hunters on horseback accompanied by their loyal pack of dogs. The image is part of an album compiled by Col Joseph Hume Balfour, who served in the Indian Army during this time. The Peshawar Vale Hunt was established in 1870 by the British Army using regimental and private packs stationed around Peshawar. Instead of foxes, jackals were hunted due to their abundance in the region. The hunt even embarked on a march to Kabul during the Second Afghan War before returning to its base. Maintaining such a pack was no easy task given the challenging climate and frequent postings of officers. Yet this photograph captures a moment frozen in time when these dedicated hunters came together for their shared passion. In addition to showcasing the thrill of hunting, this photo offers insights into colonial life and military culture at that time. It serves as a reminder not only of our fascination with wildlife but also highlights how different societies have engaged with animals throughout history. This print from Fine Art Finder allows us to appreciate both the artistry behind early photography and gain glimpses into historical moments that shaped our world today.
