EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph print depicts the ancient Irish Elk, scientifically known as Megaloceros giganteus, a diluvian ancestor of the modern Irish deer. The Irish Elk is renowned for its enormous size and the massive antlers that set it apart from its contemporary deer species. With an estimated height at the shoulder reaching up to 1.8 meters (6 feet) and antlers spanning over 4 meters (13 feet) in width, this majestic creature was one of the largest deer ever to have existed. The Irish Elk roamed Europe during the Pleistocene epoch, around 300,000 to 10,000 years ago. They were widespread across the continent, but their remains have been most frequently discovered in Ireland, hence the name 'Irish Elk.' Historically, the Irish Elk was an essential prey species for early humans and other large predators, such as cave bears and wolves. The massive antlers, which were covered in a velvety texture during the growing season, were not only used for display and combat but also provided essential resources. The velvet-covered antlers were rich in nutrients and were consumed by humans and other animals, contributing to their survival during harsh winters. Despite their impressive size and resilience, the Irish Elk succumbed to extinction around 7,000 years ago. The exact cause of their extinction remains a subject of ongoing debate among scientists, with theories ranging from climate change and habitat loss to human hunting pressure. This photograph print offers a glimpse into the past, allowing us to appreciate the majesty and grandeur of this extinct, yet fascinating, creature. The Irish Elk serves as a reminder of the rich biodiversity that once existed and the importance of preserving the natural world for future generations.
