Sir Henry Parkes (1815-1896): A Pioneering Statesman of Australia This evocative photograph captures Sir Henry Parkes, an Australian political giant, in the later years of his distinguished career. Born in England in 1815, Parkes arrived in New South Wales, Australia, in 1839, and quickly became involved in local politics. He is often referred to as the 'Father of Federation' due to his instrumental role in the federation of the Australian colonies. Parkes' political journey began in New South Wales, where he served as a member of the Legislative Council from 1843 to 1848. He later represented the seat of The Hunter in the New South Wales Legislative Assembly from 1856 to 1859 and from 1872 to 1891. In 1859, he was appointed the Colonial Secretary, a position he held until 1865. During his political tenure, Parkes advocated for democratic reforms, including the secret ballot and the extension of the franchise. He also played a crucial role in the passage of the Marriage, Divorce, and Property Act of 1884, which granted women the right to own property and to initiate divorce proceedings. In 1891, Parkes retired from politics and was knighted by Queen Victoria for his services to the colony. He continued to be an influential figure in Australian public life until his death in 1896. This photograph, taken in 1896, captures Sir Henry Parkes in the twilight of his life. His distinguished beard, framing his stern yet thoughtful expression, speaks volumes about his wisdom and experience. The creases on his forehead and the lines around his eyes attest to the long hours spent in the pursuit of political progress. The photograph is a poignant reminder of the indelible mark Sir Henry Parkes left on the history of Australia.
