In the Middle Ages d Amboise held a strategic position overlooking one of the few bridges across the Loire. The original castle keep was confiscated in 1434 from the Counts of Anjou by Charles VII. The present chateau which dates from the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries was the first royal building of the Renaissance in the Loire Valley. Leonardo da Vinci died and is entombed in the chateau.
