EDITORS COMMENTS
This photo print, titled "Richard I, Coeur de Lion landing at Jaffa (Joppa), September 1191" takes us back to a significant moment in history. Created by the talented artist William Heysham Overend around 1880, it beautifully captures the essence of Richard the Lionheart's heroic journey during the Third Crusade. Richard I, also known as Richard Coeur de Lion or Richard the Lionheart, was an influential monarch and warrior king of England in the 12th century. In this powerful image, we witness his arrival on the shores of Jaffa after leading his crusaders against Saladin, a prominent Muslim leader. With his majestic presence and regal attire adorned with armor and chainmail, Richard stands tall as he disembarks from a ship onto foreign land. Holding an axe and shield firmly in hand while clutching a spear adorned with a cross symbolizing Christianity's cause, he exemplifies strength and determination. The surrounding soldiers clad in medieval attire reflect their loyalty to their sovereign king. The vastness of the Mediterranean Sea serves as a backdrop for this historic event that shaped not only England but also Palestine. Through this remarkable wood engraving brought to life by Overend's skilled hands, we are transported back to an era filled with warfare and religious fervor. It is a testament to both Richard's bravery and his pursuit of peace through signing the Treaty of Jaffa. This print serves as a reminder of our rich past where kings like Richard I left indelible marks on history through their courage and leadership.
