Photograph, India, 1896.
The Hunt was formed by the Army in 1870 out of the regimental and private packs stationed around Peshawar. Jackal were hunted instead of the fox, and were very plentiful. The pack marched to Kabul during the 2nd Afghan War (1878-1880), and then back to Peshawar. The maintaining of a pack was extremely difficult, due to the climate and frequent postings of officers.

The Peshawar Vale Hunt, 1896 circa
EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating photograph that captures the essence of an adventurous hunting expedition in India during the late 19th century. The image showcases a group of skilled horsemen elegantly riding their horses through the picturesque landscape, accompanied by a pack of energetic dogs. This timeless snapshot offers a glimpse into the unique tradition of hunting jackal instead of foxes, which were abundant in the region. Formed by the Army in 1870, The Peshawar Vale Hunt was composed of regimental and private packs stationed around Peshawar. The hunt's rich history includes marching to Kabul during the Second Afghan War before returning to its base in Peshawar. However, maintaining such a pack proved challenging due to frequent officer postings and harsh climatic conditions. This particular print is part of an album compiled by Col Joseph Hume Balfour, who served with distinction as part of the Indian Army's 13th Lancers from approximately 1887 to 1912. Balfour's collection consists of over one hundred photographs that provide invaluable insights into various aspects of military life and leisure activities during this period. With its stunning composition and historical significance, this photograph not only celebrates equestrian prowess but also serves as a testament to man's enduring connection with nature and his desire for adventure.
