Grigori Rasputin with Russian soldiers

Grigori Yefimovich Rasputin (1869-1916, centre), Russian mystic. He is flanked by two Russian soldiers: Prince Mikhail Sergeyevich Putyatin (left) and Colonel D. Loman (right). Rasputin, born in Siberia, was a wandering mystic and healer who rose to power in Imperial Russia by gaining the confidence of the royal family by acting as healer to their son. However, Rasputin became involved in the political struggles between monarchist, anti-monarchist, revolutionary and other political forces, and, in 1916, was assassinated in St Petersburg. Photographed in 1910, in St Petersburg, Russia

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the enigmatic figure of Grigori Rasputin, flanked by two Russian soldiers, Prince Mikhail Sergeyevich Putyatin on his left and Colonel D. Loman on his right. Taken in 1910 in St Petersburg, Russia, this image offers a glimpse into the tumultuous political landscape of Imperial Russia during that time. Grigori Rasputin, born in Siberia, was not only a wandering mystic and healer but also an influential court official who gained the trust of the royal family through his healing abilities. However, as political tensions escalated between various factions within Russia - monarchists, anti-monarchists, revolutionaries - Rasputin found himself entangled in their power struggles. Tragically, just six years after this photograph was taken, Rasputin met a violent end when he was assassinated in St Petersburg. His assassination marked a turning point in Russian history and further fueled the flames of discontent that eventually led to the Russian Revolution. In this group portrait captured by Science Photo Library's lens, we witness an intriguing trio: one man with immense spiritual influence surrounded by two soldiers representing different aspects of power and loyalty. It serves as a reminder of how individuals can shape history through their actions and connections. As we delve into this historical moment frozen in time by Science Photo Library's meticulous documentation, we are reminded once again that behind every significant event lies complex human stories waiting to be unraveled.
