Sergei Korolev, Soviet rocket scientist
Sergei Korolev (1907-1966), pioneering Soviet rocket scientist (left). Also seen are glider designer S.N. Lyushin (centre) and pilot Artseulov (right). Korolev studied aviation in Moscow, and in his late teens designed and built gliders as a hobby. After developing an interest in rocketry, Korolev formed the Moscow Group for the Study of Reactive Motion who, in 1933, launched the USSRs first liquid-fueled rocket. He was arrested during Stalins purges but, his importance being recognised, was allowed to continue his research. After the Second World War he was released and set to work developing rockets, both for space exploration and military use. His most famous was Vostock 1, which carried the first man into space. Photographed in Crimea, USSR

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the iconic figure of Sergei Korolev, a pioneering Soviet rocket scientist who left an indelible mark on the world of space exploration. Standing to his left is glider designer S. N. Lyushin, while pilot Artseulov stands to his right, forming a trio of brilliant minds in this historical moment frozen in time. Korolev's journey began with a passion for aviation during his youth in Moscow, where he designed and constructed gliders as a hobby. However, it was his fascination with rocketry that propelled him into greatness. In 1933, Korolev founded the Moscow Group for the Study of Reactive Motion and successfully launched the USSR's first liquid-fueled rocket. Despite enduring arrest during Stalin's purges, Korolev's significance could not be ignored by those who recognized his genius. He was granted permission to continue his research and went on to develop rockets for both space exploration and military purposes after World War II. His most renowned achievement came with Vostock 1—the spacecraft responsible for carrying humanity's first astronaut into space. This monumental feat forever changed our understanding of what lies beyond Earth's atmosphere. Photographed against the backdrop of Crimea in the USSR, this image serves as a reminder of Korolev's remarkable contributions to science and engineering. It symbolizes an era when human ingenuity pushed boundaries previously thought impossible—a testament to one man’s unwavering dedication amidst challenging circumstances.
